Derby Dam

First major diversion structure of the U.S. Reclamation Service (Bureau of Reclamation), completed 1905 on the Truckee River east of Reno. The low concrete dam launches the Newlands Project, sending Truckee water south via the Truckee Canal to Lahontan Reservoir and Fallon farmland. Listed on the National Register as Derby Diversion Dam; Nevada Historical Marker No. 43. A pivotal and controversial piece of Western water history with lasting effects on Pyramid Lake.
