Large middle-Rio Grande refuge where Chihuahuan Desert, Great Plains grassland, Colorado Plateau shrub-steppe, and piñon-juniper meet along the river corridor. Visitor center at I-25 Exit 169 anchors nature loops and mesa trails; winter waterfowl in wetland units, year-round lizards, raptors, and mammals. Also the gateway toward jointly managed San Lorenzo Canyon (BLM/FWS) sandstone formations.
