BLM El Malpais National Conservation Area day-use site on NM 117 where a young basalt flow squeezes against a 500-foot sandstone mesa. The Narrows Rim Trail starts at the south end of the picnic area and runs ~4 miles one-way along the mesa rim over the McCartys lava flow, with distant views of La Ventana Natural Arch, strong birding, and classic El Malpais lava-vs-sandstone scenery.
