Historic Applegate–Lassen Trail geothermal springs at the base of Black Rock Point on the northeast edge of the Black Rock Desert playa (BLM Black Rock Desert–High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails NCA). Emigrants used the landmark black rock and springs for water and rest; today two overlapping pools sit under the point—remote public-land geothermal feature reached only when the playa is bone-dry.
