Historic Hispanic village of San Rafael (formerly El Gallo) at Ojo del Gallo spring south of Grants on the malpais edge—site of the first Fort Wingate (1862) before the fort moved west, and a Spanish colonial / territorial settlement along the spring corridor. A state historic marker on NM-53 interprets the fort and village; Mission San Rafael and village streets remain a living historic community gateway to El Malpais country.
