Ophir

Silver–lead–zinc mining canyon town in the Oquirrh Mountains of Tooele County, founded about 1870 and named for the biblical source of Solomon’s gold. Peak census population exceeded five hundred in the 1920s; mining wound down by 1959. A tiny residual community (about two dozen residents in 2020) keeps an outdoor historic district with schoolhouse, church, hotel, and period buildings open on limited volunteer hours.
