Fossil Falls

Inyo County, CA

Coordinate verified

Pleistocene basalt channel where the ancestral Owens River once spilled over a lava dam, carving a dry waterfall of potholed, polished black rock at the foot of the Coso Range. BLM manages a small campground and short trails just east of US-395 south of Little Lake — a classic Owens Valley geology stop between Ridgecrest and Lone Pine.
