Young basalt shield and cinder-cone complex of the Big Pine volcanic field on the east side of Owens Valley south of Big Pine. Crater Mountain is the field’s most prominent cone; flows and scoria deposits record late Quaternary volcanism along the Sierra Nevada frontal fault system. Viewed and approached from public Fish Springs Road / US-395 corridor land — a different Inyo geology pin from Volcanic Tableland and Owens River Gorge kept in pass 1–2.
